Stakeholder-Dialogue

2017 German Environment Ministry’s Dialogue Forum

Enabling sports to be a driving force for sustainability

The challenge

Sports face a wide variety of sustainability challenges, from the environmental impact of sporting events to the social impact of the manufacture of sporting goods and clothing. At the same time, public prominence enables sports to set an example in the area of sustainability. The German Federal Ministry for the Environment wanted to bring together a range of stakeholders to discuss current sustainability challenges faced by sports, develop partnerships, and exchange best practices.

Our role

Germany’s Federal Environmental Protection Agency (UBA) commissioned us and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, and Energy to design and conduct the dialogue forum. The task was to find a format that would enable the different stakeholders to engage in a results-oriented dialogue on a range of topics.

The solution

  • conceive and organize the dialogue forum “Sports: a driving force for a sustainable society,” which was held in March 2017
  • exchange best practices and identify key issues and solutions.

Transformational potential

  • situate sports and sustainability within Germany’s national CSR strategy
  • encourage partnerships between environmental organizations and sports associations and set new thematic priorities.
